MANILA, Philippines -- Former ACFJ program coordinator and Ateneo faculty Cheryl Borsoto Nasol has passed, the Ateneo's Department of Communication announced in a post on Aug. 27, 2026.
Cheryl served as coordinator of the Diploma in Visual Journalism (DVJ) of the ACFJ January 2009 to January 2014.
She was herself an alumna of the ACFJ's Diploma in Photojournalism between 2007 and 2008. This program later evolved into the Diploma in Multimedia Journalism, which ultimately became the current-day DVJ.
"We remember Cheryl with gratitude and affection for the warmth and dedication she shared with her students and colleagues. Her presence in our community will be deeply missed, and her memory will remain in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched," the Department said in its Facebook post.
Cheryl has been a lecturer since January 2004 at the Department of Communication at the Ateneo, where she also finished her Master of Arts in Communication.
She was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Makati - a role she has held since November 2024.
She is an "educator, researcher, writer, editor, trainer, and former freelance photographer based in Metro Manila, Philippines. Her work centers on educational technology, digital learning, e-learning, artificial-intelligence literacy, and innovative teaching methods," her LinkedIn profile stated.
Colleagues and former students took to social media to share their memories of Cheryl, many remembering her as a professor, thesis adviser, and helpful colleague.
"Cheryl was my thesis adviser, and I learned so much from her. Years later, it was lovely to find ourselves on the same faculty, especially because she was one of those professors who continued to cheer me on long after I had graduated from Ateneo," said journalist Mara Cepeda on Facebook.
