MANILA, Philippines -- Multi-awarded photojournalist Alex Baluyut, a founding faculty member of the Asian Center for Journalism's Photojournalism program, has passed away Feb. 27, 2026, his family has confirmed.
Baluyut taught history and advanced news photography, and served as adviser for the capstone projects of the Diploma in Photojournalism, established in 2006 with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the World Press Photo.
This program continues today in the evolved Diploma in Visual Journalism, which has just started sessions last month.
In his engagement with the ACFJ, Baluyut was also sent for a tutor's training program at the World Press Photo in The Netherlands in 2007.
The Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines (PCP) said Baluyut was a founding member of their organization, and "played a vital role in documenting the defining years of Martial Law and the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, creating images that stand as enduring testaments to truth and democracy. His work helped chronicle the struggles and triumphs of the Filipino people, reflecting his deep commitment to journalism as public service."
Photojournalist Gigie Cruz of ABS-CBN News, in a tribute article for Baluyut, said he established in 2013 the first ever Master Class on Documentary Photography in the Philippines held in Los Baños, Laguna -- where he has settled with his family -- helping visual storytellers in effectively chronicling stories from around the country.
Also in 2013, together with his wife Precious Leano, Baluyut established the Art Relief Mobile Kitchen (ARMK).
ARMK is a volunteer initiative that has brought free hot meals to thousands of disaster survivors across the Philippines, from war-torn communities to typhoon evacuees.
