MANILA, Philippines - Journalist Iris Gonzales, Philippine Star columnist and advocate for the safety and welfare of women journalists, is among five alumni of the University of the Philippines College of Media and Communication who have been named as recipients of the 2025 Glory Awards.
Established in 2017, the Awards recognize alumni whose work and achievements in journalism, film, communication research, broadcasting, and allied fields bring honor to UP’s mass communication program.
Gonzales "is a multi-awarded journalist who has consistently bridged the intersections of politics, social issues, and economic policy. Her thrice-weekly column 'Eyes Wide Open' in the Philippine Star has exposed misuse of public funds, corporate vested interests, and government shortcomings while championing marginalized communities," UP said on its website.
"Her investigative reports on Malampaya, e-sabong, POGOs, and coal power have influenced public discourse and policy, earning multiple 'Feature Story of the Year' honors from the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines. Beyond the newsroom, she has joined repatriation missions, documented the plight of Filipino fishermen, and covered the Duterte administration’s 'war on drugs' and children’s cancer care, often mobilizing aid for those affected."

Gonzales is a member of the Movement for the Safety and Welfare of Women Journalists or We-Move, a consortium of over 50 women journalists all over the Philippines committed to their protection, in the newsroom and outside. As a consortium, it has at least 100 Asian women in its database.
It was formed as a consequence of conferences, fora, and gatherings led by the Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University, as part of its Solidarity for Media Freedom project.
This project began as a collaboration among ACFJ and various media organizations. It aimed to strengthen and sustain solidarity among journalists and other stakeholders, to increase their capacity to deal with current challenges to journalism and uphold press freedom, and to popularize journalism and journalism issues to a wider audience.
