Candice Reyes, photojourn graduate (2009) from the Philippines, recently won honors at the 33rd Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) held in Makati City on 19 October 2011.

Her photo of a grade school pupil kissing her father goodbye before going to her class won the Best News Photograph Award. She took this picture after the holiday break last January 2011 at P. Guevarra Elementary School in Manila.

Candice said that she did not want “ the usual photo of a school entrance jampacked with students,” as she sat inside the school that day waiting for the late comers.

“Then this beautiful moment happened. I think it was the simplest and smallest gesture that could show great love,” Candice said.

The picture was published in Manila Bulletin’s cover on January 04, 2011 entitled Back to School, but as an entry to CMMA, Candice called it “A Grateful Kiss.”

The CMMA was organized in 1978 through the Archdiocese of Manila by His Eminence Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin as a way of paying tribute to those who have promoted Christian values in an outstanding way, in radio, press, advertising, television and film.
