About the speaker
Vicente Jaime ‘Veejay’ Villafranca is a freelance photographer who obtained his Diploma in Photojournalism on a scholarship from the Ateneo de Manila University’s Asian Center for Journalism.
Before venturing into freelancing, he served as staff photographer and contributor to a number of Philippine and international news agencies. In 2008, he received the Ian Parry Scholarship, the first Filipino to have been granted the award. He was chosen for his project “Marked: The Gangs of Baseco,” which was also the final portfolio project he submitted for his the Diploma in Photojournalism.
Aside from his editorial assignments, Veejay works on long-term projects that encompass issues such as the changing Filipino culture and religious practices, displacement due to climate change, and the Filipino diaspora through different landscapes across the country.
Veejay was selected for the World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass in 2013.
